The Society of Missing Teachers

“According to school administrators, up to 1,400 teachers will be missing for the start of the school year,” writes Jean-François Gaumond (The duty, August 25). Indeed, for a long time, the teaching profession has been systematically devalued in Quebec… with the known effects: decreases in number, in experience and, in many cases, in talent of teachers. This was followed by the productivity campaign of the Minister of Education, Mr. François Legault, which resulted in a standard where “no one fails” in the schools. Add to that the increased bureaucratic burden and the crushing of almost any creative and enriching initiative among teachers, without forgetting the depressing and demeaning conditions, and it is the deathblow to education in Quebec.
