“I should be dead” : Nearly 48 hours after the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump admits to having experienced a “very surreal experience” in an interview on Sunday July 14 with the New York Post. “I shouldn’t be here, I should be dead“, the former US president told the tabloid, during an interview on board his plane en route to Milwaukee, for the Republican Party convention, where he is expected to be confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate.
“Surrealist“, this is also the feeling that has predominated in recent hours in the United States. The images of the 78-year-old former president, candidate for the White House, injured in the ear and evacuated, his cheek bloodied, continue to be broadcast in a loop on continuous news channels, such as CNN, some of whose reporters are still on site.
For his part, the Wall Street Journal surveyed dozens of Americans across the country. Many of them say they are tired, exhausted by the tensions, worried about what’s next, and have a lot of questions: “Why did Thomas Matthew Crooks shoot Donald Trump? Why didn’t the Secret Service stop him?we can read in the pages of the newspaper which mention Americans “tired” of this violence, sharing “their anger, their fear and their grief“.
Other media outlets are interested in the future: How will the Democrats run their campaign from now on? Is the election already lost? At least that’s what several Democratic consultants interviewed by NBC seem to believe. And can the assassination attempt help America put an end to what the Boston Globe qualified for “apocalyptic rhetoric“, implicating Republicans and Democrats.
Finally, since the attempted attack, Donald Trump supporters have been blaming the Democrats and defending their candidate. In New York, a city with a Democratic majority, around thirty of them are taking turns in front of Trump Tower, with giant flags and “Make America Great Again” signs unfurled.
“I froze and screamed, ‘Oh my God, Trump has been shot!’ and then chaos broke out. It was surreal for us. Every patriot felt the same way and we are angry. But we are here, in front of Trump Tower, because we want to show him that we are with him. We are not going to abandon him and more than ever, he has our support!” says Rachel Chini, who came from neighboring New Jersey.
John McGuigan, for his part, believes that this assassination attempt only strengthened the fighting spirit of their “champion”: “I broke down in tears. I was devastated and my first thought was, ‘How did the shooter get through with a gun?’ I remember, I almost had to strip naked to get into Trump’s rally in the Bronx! Donald Trump must have been scared, but he’s not going to give up. !”
Some supporters are already displaying the iconic photo of Donald Trump raising his fist in defiance toward the crowd as officers led him away.A lot of people say this is the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen. They’re right and I’m not dead. Usually you have to die to have an iconic photo.“, challenged Donald Trump in his interview with New York Post.
For his part, Joe Biden called on Americans on Sunday to do “lowering the temperature of political life“, during a speech from the Oval Office at the White House. Politics is not a “deadly battlefield” And “Violence must not become something normal” he said.
