Is there a finer profession than that linked to the world of wine? Everything converges there, however, connecting men beyond borders within a thirst for learning and sharing which, if you let yourself be taken in, puts you in an orbit of frank humanity. The SAQ has accompanied us here since 1921, leading us to drink clear and dream, evolving over the decades with a now globalized offer, and participating in its own way in our collective emancipation. Arrived in Canada at the beginning of the millennium and in the state company since 2009, Ana Bertha Gallegos Barcenas finds her happiness there. We met her recently as a beneficiary of the Golden Vines scholarship.


The question will no doubt appear simplistic, but where does your interest in wine come from?

I discovered the world of wine late in my life. I was born into a family where wine was not part of the eating habits. It was during my last year at university, in a compulsory course in viticulture, that I discovered the richness of this world.

Afterwards, everything happened: I wanted to learn more, meet the winegrowers, visit vineyards, taste everything, take part in competitions… I realized that I wanted to make this passion my career. So, when I arrived in Quebec, I enrolled in a sommelier program so that I could then find a job in the field.

How long have you worked at the SAQ? Did she contribute to your passion for this art of living in one way or another?

I’ve been at the SAQ since 2009. I started out as a casual summer employee and worked my way up to branch manager. It allowed me to stay in close contact with my passion.

The diversity of wines on the shelves is incredible: with more than 7,500 wines, products from around 80 different countries, it really gives you the chance to become a connoisseur.

In addition, we receive visits from winegrowers and agency representatives who tell us the stories behind the labels, and it gives us the desire to continue learning. The SAQ also offers training and workshops on a regular basis, which allows us to refresh our knowledge.

How do you perceive the Quebec consumer (from your point of view as a branch manager, but also in relation to when you arrived with us, in 2004)?

When I arrived in Quebec, I quickly realized the influence of European culture; it’s hard to imagine a meal with family or friends without sharing a good bottle of wine. Here, wine is part of the gastronomy and is not considered a luxury item as it can be in Mexico, my country of origin.

The Quebec consumer likes to discover and explore. When he asks one of our advisors for advice, he is always open to new suggestions. He is also very educated, which makes us always want to learn more and stay informed about trends and novelties.

You were recently nominated to receive a Golden Vines Master of Wine scholarship 2022. How will this change your life? What are your projects ?

I am still floating on cloud nine, I feel truly honored to be the first person in Canada to receive this scholarship. It will completely change my approach to the program.

Becoming a “Master of Wine” requires a lot of study time, but also involves tuition fees, expenses to participate in seminars and exams, to buy wines to taste… With this financial assistance, I will be able to focus on my studies without having to worry about raising funds.

What would you advise amateurs starting out in the profession, whether it is to write about wine, set up an agency or consider becoming a sommelier or any other profession related to the world of wine?

The world of wine is very diverse, and I think there is room for anyone who wants to grow in the industry. But you have to be aware that it is becoming more and more competitive. So no matter what someone is trying to grow into, you should never stop learning — you should always be up to date.

Today, we have access to an almost unlimited amount of free information: there are really no excuses for not developing your knowledge.
