The secretary general of the Renaissance party, Stéphane Séjourné, regrets on France Inter that it has been “months since we alerted the European Parliament” about the offensive led by Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, a secessionist territory with an Armenian majority. He calls for “sanctions”.

“I’m afraid we’ll make exactly the same mistakes as with Ukraine”, alert Thursday September 21 on France Inter Stéphane Séjourné, secretary general of the Renaissance party and president of the Renew group in the European Parliament, about the offensive led by Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, a secessionist territory populated mainly by Armenians. Stéphane Séjourné regrets that this “We have been warning about this subject in the European Parliament for months”. “It was written that Russia was going to let go of the power in place and that the idea is to have forced population movements and to liberate this territory”adds the boss of the Renew group to the European Parliament.

Stéphane Séjourné highlights France’s reaction. “The President of the Republic spoke with the Armenian Prime Minister and a meeting of the Security Council was requested [de l’ONU] on this topic”, he boasts. He therefore asserts that “this subject is a diplomatic priority for France”.
But the president of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament fears that “economic interest [ne devienne] superior to the defense of territorial interests”. “We are trying to find a coalition but there are economic interests behind it”, he denounces. Stéphane Séjourné notably mentions the fact that Azerbaijan has entered into an agreement with the European Union for the supply of gas. “Gas has been cut off in Russia, we have tried to diversify our supplies and a certain number of countries are involved in a geopolitical situation which interests Europe”he adds.
Stéphane Séjourné also accuses the “press release from the head of European diplomacy for not being up to the task”. He maintains that “European Parliament, we will have a strong commitment and a request for a resolution, including to talk about sanctions”. Because the president of the Renew group pleads for “start talking about sanctions”. He also calls for “look at the links with Russia and Turkey”.
