On the road, one in three fatal accidents in France today is caused by the consumption of narcotics. In 2022, more than 700 people would have died as a result of accidents involving the use of cocaine or cannabis.

IFour years ago, a man, who is testifying today for France Télévisions, was caught driving his car under the influence of cannabis. “I felt like it didn’t bother me. That it didn’t stop me from being vigilant“, he says. In 2022, he does it again. At 35, the father of the family now faces two years in prison, an automatic cancellation of the license and the confiscation of his vehicle. “Today, I realize that it has a real impact“, he confides.

One in five people tested positive for narcotics in 2020

In 2020, out of 450,000 targeted controls, one in five was positive for narcotics, mostly young men. This risky behavior is increasingly widespread, despite the strong messages of prevention campaigns. In 2021, after excessive speed and alcohol, narcotics were the third leading cause of fatal accidents. Every year, 700 people lose their lives on the road, killed by drivers under the influence of drugs. The most detected substances are cannabis, which alters reflexes, and cocaine, a stimulant.
