the scenarios for the qualification of the six French clubs in the round of 16

While for some, like Marseille and Nantes, the European campaign got off to a bad start, the six French clubs involved in the European Cups are all still in the race to qualify for the rest of the competitions, at the dawn of the last group matches, played from Tuesday 1 November. PSG and Rennes are already guaranteed to continue their European adventure, but will try to clinch first place in their group, respectively in the Champions League and the Europa League.

Champions League: PSG aims for first place, a final for OM

The Parisians are guaranteed to play in the round of 16 of the most prestigious of European cups. Before the last match, against Juventus, the capital’s players are neck and neck in the standings with Benfica Lisbon. The two clubs have eleven points but Christophe Galtier’s men are leaders on goal difference (+8 against +4 for Lisbon).

• If they achieve a better result or a result equivalent to that of Benfica, who travel to Haifa, the Parisians will finish first.
• If they draw while Benfica win or if they lose and Benfica don’t lose, the Parisians will finish second.

For the Marseillais, all scenarios are still possible. After five games, the Phocaeans occupy the last place in their group, only one point behind Frankfurt and Sporting, and two points behind Tottenham, first. Igor Tudor’s men receive the English on Tuesday evening.

• If they win against Tottenham and Frankfurt and Sporting Portugal part at the same time in a draw, Marseille will finish first.
• If they win but there is a winner between Frankfurt and Sporting, Marseille will finish second.
• If they draw against Spurs and Frankfurt win, Marseille will finish third and be transferred to the Europa League play-offs.
• If they lose or draw and Sporting do not lose to Frankfurt, Marseille will finish fourth and be eliminated from all European competition.

Europa League: for Monaco and Nantes, dams objective

Like Paris, Rennes are already qualified but will play for first place in the group in their match against AEK Larnaca. The Bretons, who have 11 points, are tied with Fenerbahçe, but with a less favorable goal difference than that of the Turks (+3 against +4).

• If they get a better result than Fenerbahçe, or a bigger victory than the Turks against Dynamo kyiv, Rennes will finish first.
• If they obtain exactly the same result, or a worse result than the Turkish club, the Rennais will finish second.

For AS Monaco, which receives the Red Star of Belgrade, the hopes of first place have flown away with the equalizing goal of Ferencvaros Thursday October 27 (1-1). Second, the Monegasques will therefore try to keep their position to qualify for the Europa League play-offs.

• If they win against Red Star Belgrade, the Monegasques will finish second.
• If they draw and Trabzonspor fail to win against Ferencvaros, the Monegasques will finish second.
• If they draw and Trabzonspor win, the Monegasques will finish third and be transferred to the Europa League Conference.
• If they lose against Etoile Rouge and Trabzonspor also lose, the Monegasques will finish third and be transferred to the Europa League Conference.
• If they lose and Trabzonspor do not lose to Ferencvaros, the Monegasques will finish fourth and be eliminated from all European competition.

Thanks to its victory acquired in additional time against Qarabagh on Thursday, FC Nantes is guaranteed to be at least donated to the Europa League conference. But if first place, held by Fribourg, is inaccessible, Nantes can grab a second place synonymous with qualification for the Europa League play-offs.

• If they win against Olympiakos and Qarabagh fail to win against Freiburg, Nantes will finish second.
• If they do not win, or if Qarabagh wins against Fribourg, Nantes will be third and transferred to the Europa League Conference.

Europa League Conference: for the people of Nice, all options are still possible

Provisionally first in their group thanks to their victory against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday (2-1), the Niçois are not guaranteed to qualify for the rest of the Europa League Conference. They travel to Cologne on Thursday.

• If they win in Cologne, the Niçois will be first and play in the round of 16 of the Europa League Conference.
• If they get a draw and Partizan Belgrade do not win against FC Slovacko, the Niçois will be first and play in the round of 16 of the Europa League Conference.
• If they get a draw and Partizan Belgrade win against FC Slovacko, the Niçois will finish second and enter the Europa League Conference play-offs.
• If they lose and Partizan Belgrade also loses, Niçois will finish second and enter the Europa League Conference play-offs.
• If they lose and Partizan Belgrade do not lose, Niçois will finish third and be eliminated from any European Cup.

With these performances in European cups, the Ligue 1 clubs could allow France to consolidate its fifth place in the general classification of the UEFA index. An essential fifth place since at the end of this season, it could allow Ligue 1 to obtain three teams qualified directly for the new formula of the Champions League, set up in 2024, as well as a club qualified for the preliminary round.
