(Kansas City) The Royals plan to build a new stadium in downtown Kansas City, near the T-Mobile Center and the Power & Light area.
The club unveiled plans for the $2 billion-plus project on Tuesday, two days after the Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five years.
Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium are part of the Truman Complex.
The new stadium will be able to accommodate around 34,000 spectators, around 3,000 fewer than the current stadium. The Royals hope he will be ready for the 2028 season.
The final concept is still in development, but the renderings shown Tuesday pay homage to Kauffman Stadium’s famous fountains.
The Royals began playing at Municipal Stadium in 1969, then moved to Kauffman Stadium in 1973. The venue underwent several renovations from 2009 to 2012.
The Royals ownership group plans to invest more than $1 billion in private financing, but part of the money will come from a 3/8 cent tax. It will also provide funding that the Chiefs plan to use to renovate their stadium.
The Royals’ new stadium will be located off Highway 670, where the former Kansas City Star printing plant sits largely empty.
We plan to connect several neighborhoods and create a more coherent environment in the city center.
“The stadium will provide a great sense of intimacy,” said Royals CEO John Sherman.
