the Renaissance party will not designate its head of list before January

It’s not just LR who is hesitant about the European elections next June. The presidential majority does not intend to rush to choose its leader either.

For the moment, the Macronists are observing the match already launched on the far right between Jordan Bardella and Marion Maréchal, and the match on the left between the competing Nupes lists. “We will watch them fight among themselves and we will launch our campaign very late”, confides a leader of the majority. This configuration gives hope to a minister: “We can win the Europeans thanks to the divisions of others”. In 2019, it was the RN which came first. The stakes are high for 2024, as this election will have the air of a mid-term election, with opponents who will make it an anti-Macron election.

Renaissance will not designate its head of list before January for this election scheduled for Sunday June 9, 2024. The party boss Stéphane Séjourné, also president of the Renew group – the European allies of the head of state – is “our natural candidate”, insists a MEP. Secretary of State for European Affairs Laurence Boone is also interested. The name of European Commissioner Thierry Breton is also being tested by the Élysée but an executive advisor warns: “it’s the incarnation of technocratic Europe, not sure it’s a good idea in the face of Bardella”. In any case, Emmanuel Macron will decide for the casting that he judges to be the most effective. He will also get involved in the campaign. “It’s identity for him,” judges a minister.

No question of leaving the field open

The pro-European positioning is at heart of the Macronist DNA, the presidential majority will therefore not completely leave the field open to its adversaries until the official start of the campaign. There will be a first stage of the rocket at the Renaissance campus in Bordeaux from October 6 to 8, with round tables linked to Europe: on the environment or on the asylum-immigration pact. “We will take stock of our work in Strasbourg and outline the prospects for the campaign”confides an executive.

The party even extended an invitation to the President of the Commission Ursula Von der Leyen, her arrival has not yet been confirmed. Next week, Renaissance will broadcast, at the request of the Head of State, a video and leaflets for the six years of his Sorbonne speech on Europe. Small stones before entering the fray.
