111 years after its sinking off Newfoundland, why is the Titanic still so fascinating? An exhibition dedicated to the legendary liner has just opened its doors in Paris on Tuesday July 18. An immersion in the daily life of passengers and crew members.

A shot on the prow of the Titanic à la Leonardo Di Caprio, or a souvenir photo as Kate Winslet on a reconstructed grand staircase. More than a century after its sinking, the prestigious liner and its splendor still fascinates the public. “It’s impressive, romantic and moving”, said a visitor. In the luxurious corridors of first class, visitors walk in the footsteps of the wealthiest passengers. Who could have owned this suitcase, this well-preserved suit jacket? Who washed their hands in this sink with barely rusty taps?

Remembering a page of maritime history

A total of 260 objects were recovered from the wreckage which still lies at 3,800 meters depth. “There is emotion, because we relive a little what the passengers have experienced”, says a young man. On April 14, 1912, at 11:40 p.m., the Titanic struck an iceberg, 1,500 people died in the sinking. It is with the telegraph presented at the exhibition that the captain of the ship alerts the crew from his command cabin, in vain. A life-size experience inside the ship, to remember this page of maritime history.
