The Covid-19 crisis and then inflation have forced many French people to turn to charities, which have more and more beneficiaries. Report in a solidarity grocery store of the Red Cross.

A few months ago, Joseph Moramwa pushed the doors of the Red Cross. Since then, this 20-year-old student can no longer live without it. “Wholemeal bread, eggs, pasta, ravioli, and cassoulet“, he lists. Despite a part-time job, with less than 150 euros left to live on per month, it is difficult for him to make ends meet. “I feel that I have a purchasing power that is not necessarily the greatest”he said.

After the Covid-19 crisis, it was inflation that prompted Joseph to take the plunge. The prices of certain everyday products have soared. “You have to calculate the budget, so it’s expensive, the meat“, confides Nathalie François, new beneficiary of the Red Cross. All aid included, this cleaning agent receives 800 euros per month, insufficient for her and her 17-year-old daughter. In just one year, the number of beneficiaries has doubled in this branch of the Red Cross, going from 900 people to 1,800. In addition to donations from supermarkets, associations are increasingly soliciting food banks, which are worried about their food stocks.
