After a meeting at the Ministry of Justice, the main prison guard unions called on Friday May 17 for an end to the protest movement. They believe they have made significant progress. What were their demands?
Outside prisons, the stories of prison guards responsible for extracting prisoners were similar on Friday May 17. “As soon as we leave our walls, we are insecure”sums up one of them. “Every day we take risks, even though there are technical means that could allow us to avoid these famous extractions”, adds another. They ask in particular for a switch to videoconferencing, and for magistrates to travel to prison establishments.
With one voice, officials also emphasize reduced security. “We have been reporting the information for X amount of time, we are never heard”deplores one of them. “Normally, a prison escort must be accompanied by three agents. Today, most establishments have seen this number reduced, the agents are two to save money”, specifies an official. The Minister of Justice promised to limit extractions and to make concrete proposals within two weeks.
