Monday, May 16, the town hall of Grenoble (Isère) settles the question of the burkini in municipal swimming pools, a subject which ignites debates in France.
The poster is already ready: monokini, burkini. Users of the swimming pool in Grenoble (Isère) could soon have the choice of their clothing. Monday, May 16 in the afternoon, the City Council must deliberate on the subject, in a tense climate, the proposed measure being differently appreciated by the inhabitants. In recent years, several community associations had organized demonstrations for the right to wear burkinis.
In recent months, posters had also flowered on the walls of the city, to open the swimming pools to them. Today, the environmentalist mayor says he is very favorable to this request. “I am deeply universalist, and therefore that means that we want a public service accessible to all”, says Eric Piolle. Other elected officials believe that secularism is threatened. “I consider that the return of religion in the public space and in the political debate is not a good thing”, says Jérémie Iordanoff, EELV Deputy National Secretary. The Isère prefecture has warned that it will take the case to court. But according to jurists, wearing the burkini is not in itself illegal.
