Prices continue to climb, with an increase of 2.8% in November, especially for food. In supermarkets, poultry prices, which are rising sharply, could rise further before the holidays.
On supermarket shelves, the price of chicken is particularly on the rise: + 9% on standard chickens. “I don’t buy chicken aiguillettes anymore, because the price has increased enormously“, confides a buyer. A headache for Michel Petit, poultry farmer in Avensan, in Gironde. He is faced with an increase in costs, in particular cereals, its first item of expenditure. “In recent months, it has really increased a lot. We were around 180 euros a tonne of corn a year ago, today we are at 250, practically“, he confides.
Result, the breeder lowered his margins, and slightly increased the price: 40 cents increase. His chicken is now worth 10.40 euros per kilo. For him, there is no question of reducing the breeding time to a minimum of 180 days, against less than 50 days for a standard chicken. Some manufacturers have already increased their prices in 2021, and intend to increase them again in 2022.
