Iranian President Ebrahim Raïssi has died. His helicopter crashed on Sunday May 19 in the northwest of the country. What consequences will its disappearance have on the geopolitics of the region?

The body of Iranian President Ebrahim Raïssi was found on Monday May 20 at the scene of a helicopter crash, in a steep and wooded area. “This accident occurred because of the thick fog in the area and heavy rains”, comments an Iranian journalist present on site. The president elected for three years was returning by helicopter after the inauguration of a dam.

Five days of national mourning have just been decreed by the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, the real holder of power in Iran. The deceased president was just a kind of prime minister, an executive. The Ayatollah declared in the morning that continuity will be ensured. “There will be no disruption in the work of the country”, he added. The presidential election will be held in 50 days.

On Sunday evening, fireworks celebrated the helicopter crash in Tehran (Iran). “Our younger generation is happy that he is dead. It makes us laugh, and we say it on social networks”confides an opponent of the regime, his face hidden.
