In Argentina, major demonstrations are taking place against the new president, Javier Milei, elected three weeks ago. They contest his ultra-liberal policies.

This is the third time in eight days that Argentines have taken to the streets around the unions. The demonstrators do not hesitate to defy the police, determined to repeal the decree of massive deregulation of the economy, which the new president Javier Milei announced a week ago. “The objective is to begin the path towards the reconstruction of the country“, did he declare.

Unions contest the constitutionality of the decree

The anti-system president, elected on November 19, is implementing his campaign promise: cutting public spending with a chainsaw. Called emergency necessity decree, the text targets more than 300 standards, the control of rents or the prices of essential products. He also opens the way to the privatization of 41 public companies, and wants to reduce workers’ rights. The unions are contesting the constitutionality of the decree.
