The PCF denounces “the inaction of the State”, described as “absolute shame”, while the PS is irritated by the words of the Prime Minister, who spoke Thursday morning of an “extremism on both sides” of the chessboard policy.
It is the general indignation in the French political class, Thursday, May 11, after the resignation of the mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique), Yannick Morez (DVD). Under pressure from the far right for several weeks, he lamented Wednesday in a letter a “lack of state support”.
The home of this elected official was notably the subject of an arson attack in March, without causing any injuries, in connection with the disputed move of a reception center for asylum seekers, existing since 2016, near a kindergarten. If Emmanuel Macron and Elisabeth Borne have shared their “solidarity” and their “support” to the mayor and his family, a sentence from the Prime Minister irritated her opponents.
A plural extremism that does not please the left
“The fact that this fire is linked to the relocation of a reception center for asylum seekers shows that there is a rise in extremism in our country and obviously we have to be very, very vigilant about this. subject”, estimated Elisabeth Borne. “Extremism is valid on both sides” of the political spectrum, she added, arousing anger on the left. Unhappy to be fired “back to back” with the extreme right, the spokesperson for the PS, Chloé Ridel, judged this rhetoric on Twitter as “incredible, dangerous”.
Several demonstrations against the plan to move this reception center for asylum seekers have indeed been organized at the call of the far right, in particular the movement of Reconquest!, the party of Eric Zemmour.
On the left, all parties denounced the situation which led Yannick Morez to resign. “The state’s inaction is an absolute disgrace. What is it waiting for to act?”tweeted Fabien Roussel (PCF), while Marine Tondelier (EELV) judges that “the Republic is retreating”.
Reconquest! comment late
Dozens of MEPs also rose Thursday in the hemicycle of the European Parliament in honor of the mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins Yannick Morez (DVD), at the call of their colleague Raphaël Glucksmann (Public Square ).
“It’s time to stand up. To stand up in honor of Yannick Morez, to stand up for the right and to show that hatred will not win”forcefully launched the MEP, denouncing “a dark day for the French Republic and for all European humanists”.
For her part, Marine Le Pen, leader of the RN deputies, who did not join the applause of the National Assembly on Wednesday evening in support of Yannick Morez, described Thursday on Twitter as a“inadmissible” THE “attacks and intimidation against elected officials”. “In the Republic, political disagreements are settled at the ballot box or before the courts. This rule allows no exception”she added.
At Reconquête!, we initially refused to comment. Its president Eric Zemmour finally reacted on Twitter on Friday, describing violence “inadmissible for any reason”. He adds, in line with his views on the migration crisis: “The lack of consideration of the anger (…) of our compatriots in the face of the migratory invasion is a time bomb that must be defused as quickly as possible by providing a political solution”.
