The Liberal Party of Quebec asked Prime Minister François Legault on Thursday to redo a federalist profession of faith.
Liberal MP Marc Tanguay raised doubts about Mr. Legault’s allegiances after the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) refused an amendment to a motion denouncing the unilateral patriation of the Canadian Constitution 40 years ago.
Even if the PLQ denounces this operation from Ottawa, the formation wanted to specify that federalism has benefited Canadian society, which the CAQ refused.
According to Mr. Tanguay, Mr. Legault must clarify his thinking, at the risk of creating the impression that Quebecers are exposed to a referendum on Quebec sovereignty.
“François Legault will have to, following the refusal this morning, clarify his thoughts,” he said.
According to Mr. Tanguay, the premier, a former PQ member, should renew his profession of faith in federalism, as he did in particular in 2016.
“Why, Mr. Legault, were you against asserting this morning that Canadian federalism has enabled Quebec to succeed in its nation-building project? François Legault said no this morning to that, ”said the Liberal MP.
