Renowned pianist, Bertrand Chamayou looks back on his interpretation of the work of Olivier Messiaen, with his recording of “Twenty Looks at the Child Jesus”which he will also perform in recital this summer.

After Maurice Ravel, it is another great French composer of the 20th century that Bertrand Chamayou tackles in the person of Messiaen and his colossal work written in 1944, Twenty looks at the Child Jesus. A two-hour marathon uninterruptedwhich acts as “extreme race” for the pianist, who even experienced a torn hand while recording. “This work-there, it is one of the great peaks in the history of the piano”he confides on the 11 p.m. set.

A music that wants to be universal while remaining complex and which also represents a challenge for the pianist. But despite the difficulties, Bertrand Chamayou confirms that this work discovered during childhood represents one of the experiences, physical and emotionalamong the strongest he has lived : “I was very attracted to complex things so there, it seemed like a Himalaya. What it really is. And so I really wanted to understand what it was. I’ve been wearing this for 30 years in me and there I’m happy. I’ve been working on it for 15 years”.
