The Phantom of the Opera leaves Broadway

Musical comedy The Phantom of the Operathe longest-running show on Broadway, will be presented for the last time this weekend, after 35 years.


Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical has been presented since 1988 in New York. Following the closure of theaters due to the pandemic, The Phantom of the Opera had returned to Broadway in October 2021.

The show will see the curtain fall for one last time on April 16. This end was to be expected, according to producer Cameron Mackintosh, quoted by the magazine variety, while the number of lucrative weeks has been getting smaller and smaller in recent years. Some weeks, the production was even in deficit, as the influx of spectators was reduced.

Only the announcement of the imminent end of the presentations of the famous musical made it possible to fill the hall of the Majestic Theater in New York again, according to Cameron Mackintosh.

Some 16 actors have played the role of the Phantom on Broadway over the past 35 years. The New York production generated more than $1.5 billion in profit.
