Ø The documentaries of The mine makes its cinema – Sunday, November 20, 2022
On the occasion of Documentary Month and as part of the exhibition The mine makes its cinematwo documentary films will be screened in the Georges Delerue auditorium of the Center Historique Minier.
The great struggle of the miners (1948) is a collective film produced under the leadership of Louis Daquin: in the fall of 1948, technicians and workers from the CGT film industry voluntarily produced a document on the great miners’ strike and its violent repression. André Dumaître and his team film the strikes, the workers fighting for their tools and the support of the dockers for the miners’ strike. The strength of the images and commentary conveys the intensity of this struggle. The film is prohibited by a decree of December 6, 1948, named “Jules Moch decree”, instituting a non-commercial visa for any cinematographic projection, and the copies seized in the laboratory.
Then, Harlan County USA (1976), directed by Barbara Kopple, recounts the strike of coal miners at a mine in Harlan County, Kentucky in 1973. The refusal of the Eastovers mining company to sign a collective agreement when the miners decide to move closer to a union will trigger a struggle of more than a year. The director, fully integrated into the movement, follows its evolution day by day. From the inside, she films strong, sometimes violent images of the conflict. Harlan County USA received the Oscar for best documentary film.
The session will be punctuated by a contextualization and a debate with the public.
At 15h. Duration: 2h30. Price: €5. By reservation on 03 27 95 82 82.
