As peaceful as a single-family home, this upscale condo with a unique design built in a sought-after area of Sherbrooke, a stone’s throw from André-Viger Park, benefits from all the services nearby.
“This project, I drew it from every angle six years ago. It took a rather special path because it is an owner-occupied quadruplex whose three large units I wanted to rent, but when people visited they told me they wanted to buy. I was practically forced to turn this on sale! », Relates the promoter Gilles Poulin, who thus created a joint ownership, one of the advantages of which is not to have the embarrassment of the maintenance. In addition, the configuration of the building ensures that everyone is independent, as in a house.

Passionate about design, Mr. Poulin was inspired by his many travels to create this interior. “The watchword here was purity, hence the name of my concept“ pure design space ”appearing on a plaque next to the house number. It’s always a pleasant place, no matter what room you’re in, ”he says.
Its choice of materials and colors were rather avant-garde at the time of construction and serve as a common thread in all the rooms.
I used natural wood, white, black, gray. These all-purpose color combinations are trendy today, and will last well over time.

Comforting curves
The entrance sets the spectacular tone for this characterful interior, with its 12-foot ceiling and its play on textures. Thus, a colossal cement wall leans against a partition of warm oak edged with the glossy black ceramic tiles of the floor.
The house is very modern, but not at all cold thanks to the associations of tones and materials, but also to the integration of curvaceous architectural volumes, such as the partition concealing the wardrobe of the entrance and that of the bathroom. water dressed in an ebony wallpaper with tone-on-tone patterns.
“It’s my design nod, inspired by Art Deco, Florida. Since my childhood, I have always loved these beautiful circular walls; I saw them in the neighborhoods next to my house where I had friends whose parents had beautiful homes. I always said to myself that I will make it my signature, ”recalls the owner, who is originally from Chicoutimi.
Its curved walls overlook the common area, bright, airy and enveloping at the same time. It is surrounded by a huge balcony which overlooks the landscape. “We’re in town, but it gives us the impression of being in the countryside, especially since there are a lot of trees. “
In the evening, it’s also fantastic, both outside and inside because I worked a lot on the lights.
Gilles Poulin, owner
“I believe a lot in lighting. For me, it’s a setting in its own right. I put dimmers almost everywhere, so the atmosphere is cozy, never aggressive, ”explains Gilles Poulin.
Certain elements are magnified by the light, including the generously sized kitchen island. The latter includes a gas hob and an invisible retractable hood that contributes to the simple look of this linear area, crossed by an insertion of black tiles matching those of the entrance. In summer, meals are spent on the terrace, accessible directly from the kitchen.
The gas fireplace and the island facing the living room and the dining room accentuate the conviviality of this main room. “It’s a very pleasant place for the family and also lends itself well to receptions,” notes Mr. Poulin.

Unique piece, the staircase unfolds in four flights, from the basement to the upper floor. “We didn’t plan to do the basement at the start, but at the last minute, we changed our minds and drew up the plans,” continues the owner.
The entire basement area, which includes a training room, living room and bathroom, is equipped with heated floors. The rooms are very versatile and could serve as a bi-generational space, a teenager’s apartment or an office.
As for the upper floor, it includes a huge master bedroom, a laundry room, an open office easy to transform into a bedroom and a second suite for the daughter of the house.
“She just finished her baccalaureate in marketing in Sherbrooke and started working in an agency in Montreal. As she left the house, that I will soon be retiring and that it is too big for two, we decided to sell, ”informs Gilles Poulin, whose future project is to move in with his wife in their chalet. ski in ski out of Owl’s Head.
“I think a professional couple with kids would be really good here. You just have to walk down the street with the skates on your shoulders to go skating in the park, we have a beautiful network of hiking and cycling trails and then the schools, the shopping center, everything is nearby, ”he says.
