The owner’s tour | A century-old house that has received a lot of love

Owners open the doors of their exceptional home to us, offered on the resale market

Marie-Claude Chevalier and Tyler Lane were both working in Mont-Tremblant when they met. Their first house, in La Conception, was about 80 years old and they enjoyed renovating it. However, it was in a flood zone and they grew tired of having water in their basement every spring. A century-old house near their home caught their eye.

“It was a takeover and it had been empty for a long time,” explains Tyler Lane. She needed a lot more love than the other. »

“We had taken up challenge number 1, we took on challenge number 2, adds his spouse. For us, it’s a passion. We liked to go around the antique dealers in the area and we thought that our antiques would be even more in their place in this 120-year-old house. We tried to put it back as it was originally, to bring it back to life. »

They kept the original moldings around the sash windows and unearthed old doors to replace the newer ones that had been installed.

We did not want to hide that it is a century-old house. The only areas that have been modernized are the kitchen and downstairs bathroom. At the top, you can still see the big 14-inch planks of the floor and the walls are made of wood. There is no gypsum.

Tyler Lane, owner

They didn’t have to give up their comfort, however. Soon after acquiring the house in 2011, they had a high-efficiency slow-burning wood stove installed. Its burning period can last up to 14 hours.

Two and a half years ago, they completely redid the roof. They took the opportunity to insulate the roof with spray urethane and the walls upstairs, from the outside. “We no longer need heating upstairs, even in very cold weather,” notes Marie-Claude Chevalier. We should have done it before! »

The kitchen is probably the most surprising place, with the side-by-side fridge and freezer forming an imposing duo. Tyler Lane, pilot for a major aviation company and co-owner of the famous Le P’tit Caribou bar in Mont-Tremblant, loves to cook.

“He has that in his blood, it’s another of his passions, reveals Mme Knight. It was important to him that the kitchen be super practical. She is in his image. »

The stainless steel of the appliances and the island highlight the light fixture and the table, which the couple made from reclaimed wood, among other things, during the demolition of a barn and the renovation of the gallery.

“We bought very little furniture, apart from a few found on Kijiji. We have a creative side and we don’t want to consume too much, ”says Mme Knight.

When we own a century-old house, we have to be good with our hands if we want to fit into our budget.

Marie-Claude Chevalier, co-owner

The decision to sell the house in order to buy a more spacious one, closer to the mountain, was difficult to make. Marie-Claude Chevalier will miss the proximity of the Rouge River, where she loves to paddle board. The beautiful beach, which adjoins the property, will also be missed. In return, they will no longer need to take the car to go mountain biking. Above all, while Tyler Lane’s parents have settled in a smaller home, they want to be able to receive all the members of their family, and allow them to ski more easily, among other sports.

The owners bought their house without “legal warranty” and in turn, they sell it without “legal warranty”. “I can guarantee the work I did, like the roof and the gallery, but a 123-year-old house has surprises in store,” says Tyler Lane. By opening the walls, we discovered old wiring, which we changed. But we can hardly guarantee what we do not know. »
