In the gravediggers”, which comes out on Wednesday January 26, a journalist reveals his investigation started in 2019 within the Orpéa group, the French leader in retirement homes. The picture painted is chilling even in the most expensive establishments.
A room in the Bords de Seine residence, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, in Hauts-de-Seine, cost 6,000 to 12,000 euros per month. But behind the windows, the reality would be very far from the comfort displayed by the Orpéa group. The actress Francoise Dorin died there in 2017. For her daughter, the establishment would be responsible for the weight loss of the octogenarian and the lack of care which would have led to her death. “The care is absolutely not up to par”, she says over the phone.
Shortages of personnel and lack of care were reported to Victor Castanet, a journalist who made a book of them, entitled The gravediggers. To hear it, Orpéa would have embarked on a race for profit, organized by the leaders of the group, to the detriment of the residents. “Rations were put in place: in this residence, however luxurious, they had asinstruction not to exceed three diapers per resident per day.” Mistreatment that staff and management deny. “We never rationed anything”, explains Yves Lemasne, Managing Director. The Orpéa group has indicated that it is considering legal proceedings against the journalist’s book.
