Nearly 90% of the flowers sold in France come from abroad. Their mode of production and transport are polluting. From June 2023, the origin of the flowers will be obligatorily indicated.
The flowers sometimes go around the world before arriving on the stalls of florists, Tuesday, October 4. A shopkeeper sells a majority of French or European flowers. “We work a lot with Italy with carnations, and afterwards, on the other hand, we have everything related to hydrangeas that comes from the Netherlands”, describes Marie Paolini, florist in Clamart (Hauts-de-Seine). The origin of the bouquets is often unknown to consumers. The origin of the flowers will be indicated by the florists from June 2023.
Currently, almost 90% of the flowers come from abroad. Thus, roses are grown in giant greenhouses in Kenya, all year round. This would not be possible in France, since, as with fruit and vegetables, there is a flower season. “Even if the consumer is starting to pay attention to the level of the seasons, the fact remains that the rose is in demand in all seasons”, says Christelle Serceau, artisan florist. Their method of production and their transport by plane weigh heavily in the environmental footprint of flowers.
