The Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to AmErica Claudia Goldin, professor at Harvard and specialist in labor and economic history, announced the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Monday, October 9. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize was awarded to him for “having advanced our understanding of the place of women in the job market”. Aged 77, she is the third woman to win the prestigious award, after the American Elinor Ostrom (2009) and the Franco-American Esther Duflo (2019).
“Claudia Goldin’s research has given us new and often surprising insight into the historical and contemporary role of women in the workforce,” clarified the jury. “Claudia Goldin delved into archives and collected more than 200 years of data on the United States, allowing her to show how and why differences in income and employment rates between men and women have evolved over time”noted Randi Hjalmarsson, of the Nobel jury.
Created by the Bank of Sweden, the Economy Prize “in memory of Alfred Nobel” was added in 1969 to the five traditional prizes (medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace) more than sixty years after the others, earning it from its detractors the nickname of “fake Nobel”. Like the other Nobels, the prize is endowed with 11 million Swedish crowns (920,000 euros), to be shared among co-winners.
