the new Greek camp is controversial

The European Union had a camp built that it wanted to be exemplary, on the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea. Pope Francis, who advocates a large reception of migrants, is due to go there on Sunday.

This is the number one camp, erected as a model, inaugurated a few weeks ago on the Greek island of Samos. A small sports ground, services and 3,000 places available in containers transformed into accommodation. For Ange Mouanga, a migrant from the Congo, “the conditions here are better than that of the old camp”. The old camp, a jungle, has remained as it is. It was impossible to control its comings and goings. As soon as possible, the migrants sought to flee.

The new center was set up on a remote hill. Two years of work to better accommodate migrants, and also better control them. In addition to the Greek police, a British private company provides surveillance. Doctors Without Borders has voluntarily moved away from the camp, refusing to be associated with European Union politics. For Patrick Wieland, coordinator of the organization, the image of detained migrants is the symbol of a closing Europe.
