The new formula for the final year in vocational high school is taking shape. The minister in charge of the file, Carole Grandjean, presented the outlines on Wednesday November 22 during a press conference. This is the continuation of the reform of the professional path, presented by Emmanuel Macron in May 2023.

A tailor-made end of year: at school or in the workplace

The principle of the new formula is the end of the school year “à la carte”. There will first be a first part of common core for everyone. It will include courses and a month and a half of internship. The main baccalaureate exams are postponed from June to May to make way for six weeks, different depending on the teenager’s project.

Either high school students are looking for a job to fill after the baccalaureate, in this case, they will have to find an internship from the end of May to the beginning of July. Either they prefer to continue their studies, for example in BTS, and will then stay in high school, where reinforcement courses will be given.

The vocational high school teacher unions are strongly opposed to this reform. They are calling for a strike on December 12. According to them, all students should spend as much time as possible in class and not in the workplace given that a large proportion have academic difficulties.
With this new configuration, many could instead choose the internship, attracted in particular by the new financial remuneration offered for periods in a professional environment. These new measures will apply from 2024/2025.
