The NDP is no longer the moral conscience of Parliament

The New Democratic Party has never won an election at the federal level.

However, whether with Ed Broadbent, Alexa McDonough, Jack Layton or Thomas Mulcair, the NDP has always been the moral conscience of Parliament. Between the Liberals and the Conservatives, the New Democrats always had the gift of taking the political contest to another level.

Today, we must speak in the past. Because, since the marriage between the NDP and the Liberals, the New Democrats have decided to put their judgment aside and are giving unimaginable help to Justin Trudeau.

Scientists fired

The NDP’s latest gift to Justin Trudeau is to have voted against the Conservatives’ request to investigate the activities of two scientists fired in 2021 from a high-security biomedical laboratory in Winnipeg because of their relations with China.

Difficult to explain as a decision on the part of the NDP. However, in the agreement between the oranges and the reds concluded in 2022, it does not say that the NDP must save the government from all the investigations that the committees would like to carry out.

Clearly, for dental care and an embryonic pharmacare program, NDP MPs are ready to put their morale aside.

It’s not very edifying. Normally, the role of opposition members is to hold the government accountable to Canadians.

Next election

One day or another, there will be an election. No later than October 20, 2025.

Presumably, the left party fails to take advantage of the liberals’ failures. The last by-election in the riding of Durham confirms that the NDP is also in decline.

Just like the Liberals, the NDP lost 7% on Monday evening in the Ontario riding.

Thus, by supporting an unpopular and worn-out party, the NDP is losing ground and its credibility is taking a hit.
