The monumental sculptures of the Abri de Cap Blanc

Stéphanie Douieb, guide at the Abris de Cap Blanc, tells us that these masterpieces of monumental sculpture in the art of the Upper Palaeolithic contained in this shelter date from around 17,000 years before today.

A sculpted, engraved frieze runs along the vertical wall at the bottom of the rock shelter. These are sculptures in low and high relief with very pronounced modelings

Indeed, the life-size central horse measures 2.20 meters in length. It is the largest prehistoric sculpture known to date, which arouses the wonder of visitors.

In 1909, these were the first prehistoric sculptures unearthed

Facing the sculpture, the effect is striking. It occupies 13 meters out of the 15 meters of the shelter and the perspectives are perfectly controlled.

In addition, on these sculptures, there was probably some red color since we found residual remains of ocher. So this site and its sculptures had to be seen from very far away.
