The mayor of Carnac, Olivier Lepick, victims of threats, was placed under the protection of the gendarmerie, Friday, June 9. The controversy arose after the construction of a DIY store on a reference site as archaeological.
Olivier Lepick, mayor (SE) of Carnac (Morbihan), no longer travels without them. Since Friday, June 9, two gendarmes have accompanied him constantly. Victim of messages on social networks, he was put under police protection. He and his family would receive hundreds of hate messages since the announcement of the destruction of possible menhirs, during the construction of a DIY store for which he signed the building permit.
“There are bound to be places where there are holes in the racket”
It is impossible to build in the city without an archaeological diagnosis. In 2019, the site of the future store was excavated by the departments of the cultural affairs department. They discovered an alignment of ancient stelae there. According to Christian Obletz, an amateur archaeologist, the project should never have seen the light of day. The public body, for its part, indicates in a press release that “damage to a site of archaeological value has not been established”. She had ordered additional excavations, which were never carried out.
The mayor defends himself from any breach, and speaks of an administrative mess. “3,800 hectares with archaeological prescriptions almost everywhere, there are bound to be places where there are holes in the racket”he justifies himself.
