(France 2)

Jamilah Habsaoui, the mayor of the town of Avallon, in Yonne, was placed in pre-trial detention on Wednesday April 10, after the discovery of 70 kg of cannabis resin in a house she owns.

In Avallon (Yonne), residents are stunned to see their mayor in prison and many find it hard to believe their elected official’s involvement in drug trafficking. In addition to her mandate as mayor, Jamilah Habsaoui works part-time as a pharmacy technician. The pharmacy was searched and nothing was found there. “We knew that she had a brother who had been convicted about fifteen years ago for drug trafficking problems, since then, we have never spoken about it again.“, assures Antoine Guibourt, employer of Jamilah Habsaoui.

One of her brothers clears her

She is being prosecuted after the discovery, in the house she owns, of 70 kg of cannabis resin, nearly a kg of cocaine, 7,000 euros in cash and two gold bars. After 72 hours in police custody, the mayor of Avallon was indicted on Wednesday April 10 and placed in pre-trial detention. Jamilah Habsaoui’s two brothers were also indicted and imprisoned. One of them clears her completely. Five people were indicted as part of a judicial investigation for drug trafficking.
