Heading for Miami, in the United States, where the largest cruise liner in the world has cast off. 8,000 people are on board this sea monster whose environmental impact could be disastrous.

The largest cruise ship in the world, the Icon of the Seas, set sail from Miami (United States) to set sail for the Caribbean. For its first trip, the liner is full: 10,000 people on board this immense floating amusement park with XXL slides, dozens of swimming pools, jacuzzis and even an artificial wave for surfing. The Icon of the Seas is not the only giant liner to sail the world’s seas. According to specialists, this industry is disastrous for the environment.

Shipowners defend themselves

During stopovers, these pharaonic ships disrupt the daily lives of local residents and become the target of environmental activists. Through mobilization, Venice (Italy) banned cruise ships in its historic center. In Corsica or even in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), they continue to spark controversy.

The owners of the Icon of the Seas defend themselves, and assure that their boat is powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner fossil fuel according to the company. However, it emits methane, a greenhouse gas that is much more harmful than carbon dioxide.
