The world of rugby is in mourning. André Morel died in his 95th year, on March 3.. He was born on November 20, 1927 in La Tronche. He played only one match with the France team, in September 1954, it was against Argentina, during which he scored a try. Of course, he previously played with FC Grenoble as a wing three-quarter. In May 1954, he had won the title of champion of France, the only one that the FCG had ever won. Suffice to say that it is legendary.
A desire to fight
André Morel had several lives. Before being champion of France, he had been rounded up on November 11, 1943, in Grenoble, by the Germans and the militia, during a patriotic demonstration, at the monument of the Blue Devils. He was then deported, a 16-year-old high school student, to the Mauthausen camp.. Released in May 1945, he weighed only 36 kilos.
This desire to live and to fight, this resistance, he will know how to use it, with the FCG, to win in 1954 against Cognac, in Toulouse, with the score of 5-3. André Morel will also play in Valence and La Voulte. Apart from his career as a rugby player, he has been a director of cinemas.
For Max Micoud, former president of the FCG: “Andre Morel, he was the fastest on the field, and finally, I said to myself, he’s the last to go! He was a leader. It’s an era that is fading, that’s it!”
His funeral will take place next March 10 at the PFI de la Tronche. “We will be present at the ceremony.” told us David Dussert, the general manager of the FCG. “We have great admiration for our glorious elders.”
