War in Ukraine: residents of Velyka Pyssarivka, near the Russian border, under constant pressure

In the small town of Velyka Pyssarivka, in the north-east of Ukraine, today mostly ruins remain. The town, located just five kilometers from the Russian border, was bombed by the Kremlin army. Some residents decided to stay, taking refuge in a common shelter.

Finally a lull, one of the first in two weeks. The road leading to the small town of Velyka Pyssarivka, in the north-east of Ukraine, is passable. But until when ? “The Russians bombed us with everything they could, day and night. The explosions were constant”, says Oleksii Bryl, deputy head of the local police. In the city, mostly ruins remain.

Russian retaliation

Before the war, 4,000 residents lived in Velyka Pyssarivka, located five kilometers from the Russian border. Today, few people return to recover what little they find in their destroyed house. In the only store still open in the city, customers are few in number. Residents who did not want to leave gathered in a common shelter. If the enemy attacked the town, it is because Russian militias, fighting alongside the Ukrainians, passed through there to carry out nighttime incursions along the border on March 12. These acts provoked very violent Russian reprisals.
