Should Europe’s borders be closed to Chinese electric cars? the question divides Europeans. The 27 member states have until the end of the month to maintain – or not – a surcharge imposed this summer on Chinese exports.

Chinese electric cars are not yet very numerous on our streets, but China, which is the world’s leading automobile exporting country, has a clear objective: to flood our market and kill European competition. The Chinese authorities directly subsidize their companies: this is called unfair competition.

On the European Union side, the Brussels commission is proposing to tax imports of Chinese electric cars up to 36% for five years.
