The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) calls on the international community to mobilize to prevent Iran from obtaining an atomic bomb. “We must make every effort (…) to prevent a country that has the capacity to develop nuclear weapons from taking action”declared Rafael Grossi in a video message addressed to the James Timbie Forum, a conference on non-proliferation, organized this week by the US State Department.
The IAEA warns the international community not to fail in Iran as it did in North Korea, which today has an atomic bomb. This situation “has increased uncertainties and dangers on the Korean Peninsula and Asia”remember Rafael Grossi. “This is why our current efforts in Iran are so fundamental and why the support of the international community and of course the United States is essential.”
Since 2021, the UN body has struggled to control Iran’s nuclear program, which continues to grow, although Tehran denies wanting to build a bomb. However, lately “a decline in the interest of member states”a “trivialization” of the file which finds itself eclipsed by a busy international agenda, deplores Rafael Grossi.
