In 10 years, France has lost 100,000 farms, a drop of 21%. Farmers are fewer and fewer, unlike large farms. For those who want to pass on their land, candidates are scarce.

For 10 months, Sébastien Chauvelier has changed his life. A former retailer in mass distribution, he took over from Étienne Jouffe at the head of the Mirror Farm. At almost 60 years old, the former breeder preferred to prepare for his exit before his retirement, because finding a successor is increasingly difficult. “Finding a buyer is quite complicated. Physically I was tired and my children did not want to take over the business”, he confides.

The young farmer is looking forward to his side to have “a farm that holds up”. The beautiful story, however, is an exception. For three departures of farm managers, today there is only one installation. A reality well known to Patrick Audouit, a winegrower in the Bordeaux region. Despite a recognized wine, he still has not found a buyer for his farm. “If there are no other solutions, the vines will perhaps be sold one by one, and we will see what we do with the buildings”, he explains. The situation is likely to worsen in the coming years. More and more farm managers are approaching retirement. More than one in four is over 60 years old.
