“The governments are not at the level, the citizens must continue the mobilization from tomorrow”, launches the NGO WWF

“These decisions were taken by governments that are not at the level”, declared on franceinfo Pierre Cannet, director of advocacy and campaigns of the NGO WWF, after the final agreement reached at the COP26 in Glasgow, Saturday, November 13, to accelerate the fight against global warming. “As citizens, we are worth much more than that, and we must continue the mobilization from tomorrow”, he said.

For him, this Glasgow pact, “it is as if the biggest polluters on the planet had decided to take us a little more slowly towards the climatic precipice”. He also regrets the successful attempts of the biggest polluters like India and China. “to torpedo the gradual phasing out of the use of coal-fired power stations” at the last minute, while the coal “will have to come out of our energy system”. The final version of this agreement calls for “to intensify efforts to reduction of coal”.

Beyond these disappointments, Pierre Cannet says he remains “determined, there are still things to do, we must push the European Union, France, to withdraw from public aid for gas and oil projects”. He also emphasizes the importance of citizen mobilizations.

“The ecological transition is not just an object of the COP, it is on a daily basis, in our lifestyles, our companies, our communities.”

Since the Paris Agreement, WWF regrets too slow progress. “The ball is now in the decision-makers’ court, we are here to push them”, recalls Pierre Canet. Citizen mobilization is important, “more than a million people support us to act against deforestation and act on a daily basis”. For him, “everything is not all white or all black, you have to see that things are progressing but not fast enough”.
