“It is out of the question that the owners of ‘thermal strainers’ take refuge” on Airbnb. The Minister Delegate for Housing, Olivier Klein, announced on Tuesday, October 25, that he wanted to prevent the owners of the most energy-intensive accommodation, which will be gradually banned from conventional rentals from January 2023, from renting them on Airbnb.
Under the Climate and Resilience Law of 2021, properties rated F and G in the energy performance diagnosis (EPD) will no longer be able to be rented from next year. However, this prohibition should not apply to goods intended for tourist rental. “We have to work for it to be the same rules”, said Olivier Klein on BFM Business. The government “will provide the means to put the necessary safeguards”, he added.
This discrepancy was denounced by real estate professionals, who feared that owners would transform their homes into short-term tourist rentals in a context where rental properties are becoming increasingly rare. “For months, we have been alerting to this scandal (…) Message heard by the minister. So much the better!” reacted the deputy mayor of Paris in charge of housing, Ian Brossat, on Twitter.

According to a survey of professionals, commissioned in September by the National Federation of Real Estate (Fnaim), 6% of thermal sieve owners were considering this solution.
