“We are very happy, but I think the right word is that we are relieved because we really did not want the right system to pass. We had voted for the candidate Mélenchon in the first round because of his international policy. For the election of Marcon, it is a great relief, we are very happy, “commented a Frenchman who lives in Montreal at the microphone of TVA Nouvelles in the wake of the announcement of Mr. Macron’s victory.
This voter also specified that he had voted more “against Ms. Le Pen” rather than “for Mr. Macron”.
“It’s a lesser evil, but compared to the two, he still has a lot more skills than Marine Le Pen by his experience, by his vision and also by his fresh air that he brings to French politics”, a he said.
On the Quebec side, as in the first round, support for the right was stronger than in Montreal with 25.5% of support for Ms. Le Pen, against 74.5% for Mr. Macron.
In comparison, the results in France as a whole give a victory to the incumbent president with around 48% of the vote, against 42% for his opponent.
In 2017, the French in Quebec had also largely supported Mr. Macron, with 90% support on the Montreal side.
