A wealth record. In 2024, the cumulative fortune of the 500 richest French people will exceed 1,200 billion euros for the first time, according to the magazine’s annual ranking Challenges, published Thursday, July 18. In total, the 500 largest fortunes thus total 1,228 billion euros, or 5% more than in 2023. And the first ten names in this ranking monopolize 693 billion euros.
Bernard Arnault, head of LVMH, still sits at the top of the podium with 190 billion euros. The Hermès family comes second, with 155 billion, an increase of 17 billion euros, ahead of Alain and Gérard Wertheimer, heirs of Chanel, with 115 billion.
Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, with 84 billion euros with her family, comes 4th and remains the richest French woman in a ranking largely dominated by men.
The assets of Bernard Arnault and François Pinault of Kering (8th in the ranking with almost 24 billion euros) have also “fallen by several billion euros, particularly due to the difficulties of the Chinese market”which weighed on stock market prices, comments Challenges.
At the same time, the number of billionaires has increased to 147, compared to 141 in 2023 and 67 ten years ago. The minimum fortune to be among the 500 richest French people is now 245 million euros, compared to 235 last year and 80 in 2014.
