It is one of the deadliest shipwrecks in recent years in the English Channel, 12 migrants died on Tuesday September 3rd, including 10 women. The fishermen who came too late to the rescue of the shipwrecked testify, still in shock.

They set sail again the day after the shipwreck, but today, for the fishermen of Boulogne-sur-Mer, their hearts were not in it. Among the first to arrive offshore, at the scene of the tragedy, they could do nothing to save the refugees who died yesterday: “The images will remain forever and ever”explains a fisherman still in shock.

The refugee boat was first spotted around 10am by another fisherman: 60 people crammed into a canal with fewer than 10 life jackets. This is an almost daily scene in this part of the Channel. An hour after seeing them, a radio alert message warned that the boat had broken up. The fishermen then went to the area. The rescue services managed to save 53 people but 12 others died. It is the deadliest shipwreck in the Channel for almost three years.
