The ongoing fires in Greece continue to progress, Wednesday July 19. The outbreaks of fire are numerous, and the winds do not help the work of the mobilized firefighters.
Thick smoke and still devouring flames, Wednesday July 19. For the third consecutive day, the fire is gaining ground in central Greece. Army vehicles have been mobilized to come to the aid of the firefighters, but the outbreaks of fire are incessant, carried by winds at 60 km / h. A huge battle is engaged against the flames. Some fires are visible from space.
Thousands of acres burned
Several outbreaks are still persistent: the first to the northwest of Athens (Greece), and another further east, towards the city of Corinth (Greece). “This is where I grew up, where I was born. To see it all suddenly destroyed, it hurts my heart“, confides Nikos Ioanou, a volunteer firefighter who returns from two days of fighting the fire. Near there, the flames died out, revealing a charred landscape. Thousands of hectares burned and houses were destroyed. Some residents deplore the lack of means deployed.
