Tuesday June 28, while the French public service is on strike against the plan to abolish the audiovisual license fee, the BBC, a British public service, will experience the same fate in 2027.

For a hundred years, the BBC has enabled Britons to follow the news on television, radio and the Internet. The public audiovisual giant is however weakened. From 2027, the government will abolish the fee of 184 euros per year, which worries employees. A union representative recalls that the contribution finances 75% of the budget of the BBC, which does not count on advertising.

No replacement plan is planned, while the fee has been frozen for two years and will therefore not be able to increase at the rate of inflation. “This will make more money in the pockets of retirees, families, who are struggling to make ends meet“, assures the government. For Claire Enders, media specialist, these reprisals are also political. Boris Johnson would have considered the BBC too critical, in particular during the Brexit campaign. “It naturally creates a completely existential pressure on the public service“, she explains. Positions will be eliminated in order to save money.
