They felt insulted. The National Federation of Hunters (FNC) is suing MP Sandrine Rousseau for comments in February in which the ecologist had drawn a link between feminicides and a supposed “intrinsic violence” hunters. The FNC claims nearly 100,000 euros in damages, according to the summons consulted Thursday, August 25 by AFP. For the lawyer of the FNC, the words of the elected representative constitute a “denigration” and should be qualified as “serious willful misconduct” having caused a “moral prejudice”.
“I think we have to stop hunting completely”declared Sandrine Rousseau, on February 22 on France 2, after the death of a hiker accidentally killed by the shooting of a young hunter in Cantal. “It’s not a hobby to go and kill animals at the weekend with guns. And moreover (…), the rest of the week, you can also point him at his wife. We saw that one in four femicides is linked to hunting weapons”had declared the one who was then president of the political council of the environmental candidate for the presidential Yannick Jadot.
“Not all hunters kill their wives”retorted the journalist. “Not fortunately (…) but it is part of this intrinsic violence of this category of the population who thinks that, in their leisure time, one can go every week to kill animals in the forest to the detriment of walkers”had argued the finalist of the environmental primary.
“These remarks are scandalous: she does not like hunting, it is her right, but to go from there to make shortcuts in the media between feminicides and hunting, it is extremely insulting“, said the president of the FNC, Willy Schraen, to justify the legal action.
“Hunters can’t stand being disagreed with them“, reacted Thursday Sandrine Rousseau in front of journalists on the sidelines of the summer days of the Greens in Grenoble. “Nature does not belong to them. We will go to this trial. I have just released a book, Coming out of the androcene (neologism meaning the era of males)they should read it”, she said. A first hearing, for recording and fixing the timetable of the procedure, must be held on September 21 before the 17th civil chamber of the Paris court.
