With the riots taking place in New Caledonia, the lives of the island’s inhabitants are turned upside down: the fear of shortages is one of the main concerns.

Friday May 17, the queues are still endless in front of the few supermarkets still open in Nouméa, New Caledonia. Employees of a brand organized a free distribution of diapers and milk packs. Other supermarkets have decided to ration so that everyone has something to eat. In a bakery, flour is also in short supply. On the fifth day of the riots, the daily lives of residents are becoming more and more difficult.

On a stretcher, a 71-year-old patient is in critical condition. She hasn’t been able to do dialysis for a week. Like her, there are around a hundred patients waiting for dialysis in a clinic on the island. Three people have already died due to lack of access to care. To enable rapid initial treatment of patients, the New Caledonian government has announced the establishment of an advanced medical post.
