For Léon Deffontaines, head of the list of the French Communist Party (PCF) in the European elections, guest of “Europe Fridays” on France Inter on Friday March 22, European construction is “a democratic fraud”. The 28-year-old candidate refers to the “no” inflicted by 54.67% of French people in 2005 in the referendum on the European Constitutional Treaty (TCE). By this rejection, they showed, according to him, that they “did not want this liberal Europe and unfortunately, it came back out the window”.

In 2008, Nicolas Sarkozy went through a constitutional revision before Congress to ratify the Lisbon Treaty which included most of the measures of the ECT. Many French people experienced it as a betrayal. “The European Union is being built against the will of the people. European construction today is a democratic fraud,” he estimated. However, Léon Deffontaines does not wish “call into question this regional cooperation. We must build another Europe”he said.

Ceta, symbol of “democratic fraud”

Ceta, the free trade agreement between Europe and Canada, which has just been rejected by the Senate, is “the very example of what I mean by democratic fraud”. The trade agreement “has been at work on our continent for more than seven years, yet it has never been ratified by Parliament”, he points out. It was a “provisional application, but which extended in a very lasting manner for more than seven years”he regretted.

Novice in politics, Léon Deffontaines launches into “the big bath” Europeans. “I come from a town in Amiens which has been marked by factory closures and declines in public services. This is also why I am involved in the European elections. It is to address those and those who are victims of these liberal European policies”, he said.
