This Saturday is a new stage for the North plant. The end of an epic for Koniambo Nickel. After a decade of operation, the adventure ends for nearly 1,200 employees. As the plant’s cold start begins, they are asked to leave the site today.
The KNS workers passed through the gates of the factory compound one last time and handed in their badges. After six months of attempts to save this industrial tool, to maintain the factory and the jobs, no solution has yet been found.
Today is the end of the adventure for nearly 1,200 employees of the site. Some want to stay positive, others are emotional, but all speak of a great adventure together that will have lasted 12 years for many of them.
There are only 250 employees left on the site. They will still working here for a few months for the cold standby of the ovens, a complex procedure which will start this Saturday evening at midnight.
