In the absence of “natural candidate”, The Republicans have decided to postpone the election of their next president for a few weeks. She haswill finally take place on 3 and 4, then 10 to 11 December, rather than in November. The renunciations of many prospective candidates, including Laurent Wauquiez, explains this decision. The president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, who left office on July 1, announced on Sunday that he was giving up running for the presidency. Just like Xavier Bertrand, president of the Hauts-de-France region, or Julien Aubert, beaten in the legislative elections. “For the refoundation (of the party) and all the work we have left to do, we are not nearly two weeks away!”joked LR vice-president of the Ile-de-France region Othman Nasrou.
Annie Genevard does not rule out being a candidate but has not made a decision. Among the other names circulating are those of deputies Aurélien Pradié and Eric Ciotti, former minister Rachida Dati, or even the mayor of Cannes and president of the Association of Mayors of France David Lisnard. Michel Barnier informed Tuesday evening at the Figaro that he didn’t rule out running either. “But before committing, I want to be sure that our objective will be collective”, argued the former European Commissioner. Potential candidates have until October 3 at 6 p.m. to file the required sponsorships with the High Authority of the movement.
