France is Europe’s leading egg producer. Star of our fridges, 99% of French people say they eat it.

The French consume on average four eggs per week. If they prefer to eat it fried, the omelette and hard-boiled egg come in second and third place on our plates. 13% of French people own a laying hen, but they generally get their supplies from supermarkets. Three out of four eggs are sold in supermarkets.

Cheapest animal protein

Consumers are increasingly sensitive to the quality of the eggs they purchase. Out of 10 eggs, two come from caged hens. To know what you are buying, just look at the shell: 0 for an organic egg, 1 for a free-range egg and 3 for battery hens which can be up to 60 in the same cage. Anti-crisis food par excellence, the egg is the cheapest protein, with 4.40 euros per kilo on average. With inflation, sales increased by 6% last year.
